How To Make A Cake Healthier

Friday, May 14th, 2010

The words “cake” and “healthy” don’t really seem to go together.

We don’t think of cake as healthy. Part of our understanding of cake is that it is slightly sinful for us to eat. It’s a bit decadent, indulgent. We enjoy the flavor and the richness of it, knowing that we cannot indulge often because of the possible negative effects.

If we do hear of a healthy cake, we’re likely to write it off as something that will taste bad, even without trying it first.

Being ‘healthy’ almost ruins a cake, in a way. A healthy cake sounds like something that is a ripoff, a half-dessert half-health food hybrid that just isn’t quite as satisfying.

Since we are unlikely to get over the hurdle of public opinion regarding health foods, instead we’ll try to make cake ‘healthier’ or ‘less unhealthy’ rather than ‘healthy’. Perhaps there will still be room for the expectation of deliciousness.

Most cakes are actually two recipes, combined. First there is the cake, consisting largely of butter, flour, sugar and eggs. The second component is the frosting, generally made from sugar and butter.

If we consider each ingredient in turn, we can often think of a healthier alternative that might be feasible. Often the substitutions won’t harm the texture or flavor either – vegan and health food restaurants these days bake cakes that are rich and decadent and would fool the most discriminating palate.

It’s a matter of taking a few of the least healthy ingredients, and substituting appropriate healthier items. Any recipe for cake can become a ‘healthy cake’ recipe with this technique. Use your favorite cake recipe, and decide ingredient by ingredient where you can make changes.

Whenever you are experimenting though you’ll want to try out your new version before serving it to guests. Cake recipes can be fussy things. Try it at home with just your family, to make sure that your latest substitution experiment doesn’t ruin a cake for an important occasion.

Ways You And Your Kids Can Enjoy Mother’s Day Together

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

If you are a mom, you probably love Mother’s Day. The gifts that are created by our children are treasures to hang onto. We’ll cherish them for years to come. If you are a dad, however, you may be trying to help your kids come up with some good ideas for Mother’s Day.

You really can’t go wrong by making breakfast for mom on Mother’s Day. Just be sure to help the younger kids and supervise any use of the stove.

A tea party is another idea that little girls will especially love. Mothers and daughters can dress alike try poodle skirts and really make it a fun day. Hip Hop has child and adult poodle skirts as well as little bow ties for the boys.

Another idea is a dance. Little kids love to dance, and so will mom, particularly after she sees how excited her kids are about the dance that they planned and set up.

Cleaning the house for mom is really a great way to make her feel cherished on her special day. Who wouldn’t want to sleep in and then wake up to a nice clean house?

There are lots of crafts that are fun for both mothers and children. Some women make it a tradition to get handprints done with their children each year. They’ll later cherish those handprints as the children get older.

How about planning a flower for mom? You could buy her a potted flower plant, or you could start with seeds and go out and plant them together. She’ll be able to enjoy the flowers again and again as they bloom! Another idea is a letter telling mom how special she is.

Dads can help the littler kids with any of these ideas, even the written letter. Moms will cherish these gifts for many years to come. So long as the child is truly involved in the gift, mom will love it!

The Health Benefits of Eating Shrimp

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

One of our most versatile foods is Shrimp. They are the basis for many quick and easy recipes which taste absolutely delicious.

It is one of our most versatile foodstuffs and is delicious both spiced up and sobered down. The Shrimp meat contains healthy fats so it is often included in weight loss plans.

Shrimps can be found worldwide, and at the last count I knew over 600 different recipes for them.

There are a few things that you should always bear in mind when you cook Shrimp. Cook it slowly until the skin just turns opaque, if you cook it for any longer it will dry out and become very rubbery. It will also lose its distinctive flavor. More flavor will be retained if you cook the Shrimp in its shell.

Shrimp scampi is a very quick and easy dish if you are a fan of big flavors. You just need some basic seasonings such as parsley, olive oil, green and red peppers, garlic and onions. In ten minutes you will have a very tasty dish.

Another delicious 10 minute recipe is garlic Shrimps. Get together some parsley, garlic, lemon juice, salt and butter. Very tasty, very quick and perfect with pasta.

Another dish which combines the two is Shrimp Alfredo. This has pasta as one of its ingredients and is a complete meal. Just get the Alfredo ingredients and buy a ready made Alfredo sauce. This makes life easier and the dish even simpler to make.

An incredibly simple recipe that can be either a starter or a main meal is barbecued Shrimps. The basic ingredients are lemon juice, rosemary, garlic, basil and a bay leaf. Mix them up, chuck them on the barbecue and 5-7 minutes later you have this great dish.

There is very little expertise needed to cook Shrimp, and you don’t need cooking lessons. Anyone can make these delicious recipes as you simply can’t go wrong.

Tasty New York Food For The Lowest Prices

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

A main concern of anyone planning a trip to New York is the amount of money that they will spend on food. In fact, this city has some of best eating options in the whole of the US. The size and diversity of the population also ensures that practically every cuisine in the world is catered for.

We all know that New York is a vast, multi cultural metropolis, which so good news for us as we will be able to find any kind of cuisine. You can literally eat your way around the world without leaving the city or breaking the bank.

The first place on my list is Rainbow Falafel. I think that this shop serves the best Falafel in the whole of New York. If you are a Falafel connoisseur get yourself along and give your taste buds a real treat.

New York and hot dogs go together like peanut butter and jelly, and the best hot dogs I’ve found are at Gray’s Papaya. The price is astounding; 2 hotdogs and a drink for $2, wow!

If you like to eat in quiet, tastefully decorated premises then give this a miss. The fact they charge so little speaks volumes about the surroundings. If taste matters more to you than what’s on the walls you’ll be perfectly happy with your meal.

If you like your sandwiches big and meaty and full of flavor, head down to Tony Luke’s. They are huge, and a side order of fries with cheese and a soda make for a very satisfying meal.

After reading about this delicious food, I bet you can’t wait to try them out on your next trip to the Big Apple. It’s reassuring to know that once you get there, your money will stretch a lot further than you had originally anticipated.

So now you can plan your trip in earnest and have a better idea of how much eating budget you will need, which is probably half of want you had originally anticipated!

In addition to travel, the author also regularly shares knowledge about extra tall bar stools and bar stools for sale.

Keep Food And Drinks Supplies Chilled With Backpack Cooler Bags

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

A hard-shell or soft-sided backpack cooler bag offers a versatile solution to taking chilled snacks or drinks on mobile pursuits.

A full-sized cooler/backpack is often divided into 2 to 3 separate sections – the insulated or Thermo-Guard cooler often features at the foot of a pack, with its ability to tote soda cans or snacks for a number of hours at a desirable temperature. A mid-section offers a breathable compartment for damp items, such as towels or clothing, while the top-section offers a generous sized space, with draw-sting or zippered closure for items requiring a dry compartment.

With almost the exact same appearance as a regular styled backpack – the combi cooler/backpack comes with the extra convenience of 2 to 3 split sections to accept an efficient chilled storage area. In addition, to avoid possible damage to items stored in the top or dry-section, a cooler is often shielded with a water-resistant liner to stop all leaks.

Common features to a multi-purpose soft cooler includes its ability to accept 8 to 12 12-oz soda cans, with soft, adjustable shoulder straps for ease in carrying, convenient outside pockets are ideal for quick-access items, such as water bottles, maps, or sunglasses, and a inner plastic liner, which lifts out offers ease in cleaning.

Samfe, Picnic Time, Coleman and Ogio all make a collection of these efficient cooler/backpack bags, constructed in a choice of resilient materials, such a tear-resistant nylon, and polyester-canvas or 600-D polyester.

Recreational coolers also include the personal cooler, which is effectively a compact lunch-tote, the marine cooler is cased in a resilient, UV-resistant to cope with the harsh conditions out on the water, the thermoelectric cooler comes with a efficient plug-and-go design, these are ideal for a car, truck, SUV or similar such vehicle. A soft-sided model is perfect as a lightweight option, with a choice to carry via hand or shoulder straps, and a high-volume chest cooler is perfect for longer-term storage, with its ability to maintain food or drink supplies at a desired temperature for 4 or 5 days.

Whether it is for a sports event, picnic, fishing or camp trip, a cooler bag with its divided compartments for snacks, beverages, or clothing items, offers a great backpack for those outdoor pursuits.
