How people use bananas in recipes all over the world

In the western world we mostly see bananas as fruits that are used for deserts, maybe for banana bread. It mostly ends here. But if you look across the world you will find that there are many different ways how people use bananas in their cuisine. Ways that are not limited to just fruits and desserts but full meals. You could even compare bananas with potatoes when it comes to preparation of bananas.

To show you what all you can do with bananas I’ll start with a well known dish, a classic American dessert called the Banana Split. It’s called Banana split because the banana is split in half then a few scoops of ice cream are added, some strawberry and chocolate sauce and maraschino. This banana recipe is quite old and it comes from Pennsylvania.

A very sweet dessert that is already quite different from Banana split because it involves cooking comes from Brazil. They mash the bananas together with some brown sugar and cinnamon and cook them very slow on low heat. Everything melts together and when it cools down you can make tasty rolls out of it.

You can not only cook the bananas – you can also fry them. and they do just that in the Caribbean. They make a special dessert the is called the banana fritters. A short description of the recipe would be: cut the bananas in chunks, cover them with flour, dip them in batter, add some rum and fry them. When they are done cover them with powdered sugar and you are ready to go.

Next country that has some banana recipes to share and is big on bananas is India. They have quite a few recipes that include bananas so lets mention a few of them. I am sure that you have heard of Lassi, a traditional Indian drink. Of course there is a banana version of it that is called Sweet banana lassi and is made out of (no surprise) bananas and yogurt. Then there is a dessert called Panchamrutham that is made out of bananas, spices and honey and plenty of other recipes.

In South Asian countries such as Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand, there are hundreds, and probably thousands of cuisines made of bananas. This is doubtless due to the fact that these are some of the countries that are known to grow bananas. They strip off the outer leaves of the banana heart, commonly known as banana flower, then slice into desirable size. The slices can be added to salads, or can be used to cook curry dishes which are very common in the regions. Similarly, you can add the slices in coconut milk. The most outstanding use of the slices that bring out mouth watering delicacies is adding them in different vegetable stews. It is agreeable that there are over 100 different types of vegetable stews in the regions, but what makes them really different is the aroma produced by adding banana slices.

So you can see that bananas are not only used as a quick snack between tennis breaks. And we are not finished yet – in East Africa bananas are used for brewing beer! Another interesting fact is also that only around 80% of banana recipes use the banana fruit. Others use other parts of the banana tree like leaves. I would like to end this walk through the world of banana recipes with one more point – bananas are not only a very useful thing in cooking but they are also nutritionally rich. Add approximately one hundred fifty ml of cream in the mixture and stir in thoroughly.

Next, get three egg yolks and a hundred and fifty grams of sugar. You could put in some additional vanilla extract to the mix if you want the ice cream to become super vanilla. Blend the egg yolks and sugar until it turns a pale yellow color and thickens up a bit.

Then put the milk/cream mixture in with the egg mixture and heat at the hob for a second time until the mixture thickens up even more. It’s not quite as thick a consistency as proper custard but it must stick to the spoon that you’re using to stir it.

Once you get this consistency, set it aside to cool. After about twenty minutes in the fridge, then place it inside your Cuisinart ice cream maker. You’re able to watch as it slowly turns into ice cream. Check the consistency to your liking. It’s shouldn’t take longer than 20-30 minutes. You are now ready to consume your fresh, home made ice cream. Bon appetit.

If the summit peace talks were met with waffles there would be greater harmony. If they had waffles in prisons there would be fewer riots. These are just dreams of mine but I believe if more meetings had waffle more people could live in harmony. You may say I’m a dreamer but I am not the only one. Sitting down at a good meal always put everyone in a good mood where I am from.

There is even a national waffle week in America and National waffle day. Waffles are recognized as being one of America’s favorite foods. You hear the name waffle in many different factors including the waffle cone made by a waffle vendor who was asked at a fair to create a rolled waffle to hold ice cream.

The waffle night is very popular in a lot of families. They designate a special night of the week to get together and make waffles for dinner. No matter what is going on in the busy lives of American families it comes to a halt on waffle night where everyone looks forward to sitting down and making waffles together.

Waffles instead of gingerbread houses? Yes it’s true. Instead of using gingerbread, that a lot of kids don’t care for, try using waffles. You can pull them together with toothpicks and use frosting and other decorations to make a fun waffle house for the holidays. Waffle art is hip and fun to do and you can eat it too.

Recipe For Potato Flapjacks

Thanksgiving is over and your refrigerator is loaded with leftovers. In addition to all that turkey, you still have mounds of mashed potatoes taking up space. The last thing you want is for them to go uneaten and turn bad. So what you need is a potato pancake recipe that will help use up those leftover potatoes.

Plopping leftover mashed potatoes on peoples plates for the next three days might be met with groans, if not a downright mutiny. Well how about transforming those spuds into a treat that is easy to prepare and will sure to be a hit with your friends and family? In fact, you just might end up discovering that you wished you had more leftover potatoes to keep up with demand.

To start the ball rolling, be sure you have on hand all of the necessary ingredients. You will need vegetable oil (canola, corn or a blend works just fine), salt and pepper to taste, flour, an egg, milk, onion, and of course, those mashed potatoes. For a different taste, you can substitute bacon drippings for the vegetable oil.

To yield 4 pancakes, you will use 2 cups of your mashed potatoes. Combine them with 1/2 cup of flour, 1/4 cup of milk and 3 tablespoons of diced onion. Depending on how your family feels about onion flavor in their food, more can be used. Thoroughly mix all this together and then form it into 4 patties. Forming them on tin oil or wax paper may make it easier since the mixture may be sticky.

Coat a hot (but not smoking) frying pan or electric skillet with vegetable oil or bacon drippings. Fry each patty for 3 minutes on each side, pressing down on them occasionally with a spatula. To prevent the spatula from sticking, first spay it with a cooking spray. Pancakes are ready when they turn a golden brown. Make sure the insides are hot and that the onions are tender.

Try getting creative if you like, by adding to the mixture bacon pieces, shredded cheese or anything else you think your family will like. Sprinkle them with a little salt and pepper to taste and serve. You can also top them off with additional things like sour cream, butter, gravy, melted cheese, hot sauce or ketchup. These side dishes are good compliments to chicken, pork beef or fish. Or they also make tasty appetizers.

This is the traditional American style potato pancake recipe. To spice things up, you can also try the German style potato hotcakes which use grated potatoes instead of mashed. These are crispier and more similar to hash browns.
